A Brief History

Did you know that the U.S. flag we proudly wave today is a symbol of our unity and resilience? This 50-star flag, the longest-serving version, has stood since July 1960, representing our ever-growing nation. It follows a rich history of evolution, having undergone 26 transformations since 1777. Each change tells a story of progress and hope, from the 48-star flag that unified us for 47 years to today’s inspiring banner. Let us cherish and honor this enduring emblem of freedom for generations to come!
Did you know that Francis Hopkinson, a New Jersey designer and signer of the Declaration of Independence, helped create the first U.S. flag in 1777? As chairman of the Continental Navy Board’s Middle Department, he designed a flag with 13 six-pointed stars in five rows. He also claimed to have designed a flag for the U.S. Navy, sending bills to Congress for his work, despite not receiving the payment he requested due to other contributors being involved. While the popular story credits Betsy Ross with sewing the first flag, there’s little evidence to support this, and no official design existed until 1779. Ross’s family acknowledged her focus was on upholstery rather than flag-making. Historical records indicate there wasn’t a combined stars and stripes flag before June 1777, suggesting the flag’s design evolved over time through many contributors. Rebecca Young’s family also claims she made the first flag, with her daughter Mary Pickersgill famously creating the Star-Spangled Banner with help from a 13-year-old girl, Grace Wisher. These diverse contributions highlight the teamwork behind our national symbols. So next time you see the flag, remember the rich history and individuals who played a part in its design!

Today

Today, as we reflect on our shared history and the milestones that have shaped our collective identity, it becomes increasingly apparent that the American flag continues to stand as an unwavering emblem of the enduring spirit, resilience, and unity that define us as a nation. As we look back on pivotal moments in history, we are reminded of how this flag has consistently inspired hope, courage, and a profound sense of belonging. Much like in the past, when the flag rallied citizens during times of war, hardship, and transformational change, it still serves as a powerful symbol of hope, reminding us of the unity we can achieve when we come together with purpose and determination. Though its meaning has evolved over generations, reflecting the dynamic nature of our society, the flag remains steadfast as a beacon of togetherness, igniting within us a spark of patriotism that propels us forward even in the face of adversity.

Throughout the chapters of our national story, the flag has been both a reminder of the trials our nation has endured and a celebration of the triumphs that have defined our progress. From battlefields to civic marches, from national holidays to ordinary moments of pride where it waves above homes and institutions, the American flag is deeply intertwined with our collective identity. It represents the sacrifices made by countless men and women, as well as the rich tapestry of diversity that binds us as one people. In today’s rapidly changing world, it also calls upon us to engage in meaningful conversations about the priorities we must advance to nurture our homeland while championing values that unite us all—justice, freedom, and equality. Indeed, it is vital to remember that this flag represents far more than division or discord; it stands for the immense courage, strength, and togetherness we cultivate as individuals and communities committed to a common purpose and a shared future.

As a proud company built upon the principles that cherish our liberties and celebrate the freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution, we feel immense pride in integrating the American flag into our brand identity. Whether displayed boldly on our logo, prominently featured on our fleet of vehicles, or towering majestically on our vessels over the open ocean, this revered symbol is not just a mark of our identity; it is a tribute to the brave men and women who have made extraordinary sacrifices to defend and safeguard our cherished way of life. We salute all active-duty service members and veterans with heartfelt reverence, honoring their legacy through our steadfast commitment to the foundational ideals that uphold the belief that ‘all men (and women) are created equal.’ Our unwavering passion drives us to advocate for every individual’s right to ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.’

Inspiration fuels us—drawn from the faith our forefathers placed in God and the moral pursuits they enshrined as core to our existence. As a nation deeply rooted in spiritual strength and ethical principles, we derive guidance from those timeless values, focusing on the preservation of the invaluable freedoms bestowed upon us by our Creator as eloquently enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights. Each day begins with a prayer for peace, unity, and strength, as we set out on our endeavors with hearts full of gratitude and belief that, with God leading us, every obstacle we encounter is surmountable. This faith energizes our resolve and drives our commitment to do good in the world.
