The Importance of Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Protecting Maui’s delicate coral reefs is a responsibility we all share. This is why Maui County has a strict sunscreen ordinance. The law bans the sale, distribution, and use of non-mineral sunscreens without a prescription. This means only mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as their active ingredients are allowed.

Why the strict rule? Scientific evidence has shown that common chemical ingredients like oxybenzone, octinoxate, and octocrylene contribute to coral bleaching and harm marine life. We urge all visitors to use only reef-safe sunscreen. Better yet, consider wearing a rash guard or UV-protective clothing. This not only minimizes the amount of sunscreen chemicals entering the ocean but also provides excellent sun protection, reducing the need to reapply. Apply any sunscreen well in advance of entering the water to allow it to absorb and reduce runoff. This helps protect the reefs and ensures you avoid the infamous “Honey, your back is really red” soundbite from a bad sunburn!
